Dutch weather swings: From late-summer highs to autumn rain — what expats should expect this week

After a final summer-like day on 7 September, the Netherlands has entered an autumn pattern. This week brings cloudy skies and midweek rain (60-70% chance) but a warm weekend up to 23°C. Expats should plan outdoor activities for Sunday and prepare for cooler, wetter days ahead.

After a brief return to summer-like warmth earlier in September, the Netherlands has settled into a more typical autumn pattern. For expats and internationals living here, that means packing an umbrella and planning indoor activities for midweek, but keeping hope for a sunny weekend.

What’s happening this week (starting 21 September)

The KNMI (the Dutch national weather service) forecasts a week of contrasts. Monday (21 September) will be mostly cloudy but dry, with highs ranging from 17°C in the north to 21°C in the southeast. Tuesday brings more clouds and a chance of light rain, with temperatures between 16°C and 21°C across the country Source: DutchNews.nl.

The real wet weather arrives midweek. Wednesday and Thursday carry a 60–70% chance of rain, with occasional sunny breaks. If you’re commuting by bike or planning outdoor errands, those are the days to check the Buienradar app before heading out.

The weekend looks promising. By Sunday, temperatures could climb to 23°C with sunshine — ideal for a trip to a park, a terrace, or a day out in the dunes. The KNMI says the weekend will be warm, though it’s too early to guarantee no showers Source: DutchNews.nl.

How we got here: the last taste of summer

Just two weeks ago, on 7 September, the Netherlands enjoyed a final burst of summer. Temperatures hit 24°C on the coast and up to 29°C in Limburg and along the eastern border, with sunny skies and a brisk south-westerly wind Source: DutchNews.nl. The NL Times reported that Monday was the last summer-like day, with rain and chillier weather arriving from Tuesday Source: NL Times.

That shift was abrupt. By Tuesday 8 September, temperatures dropped to around 17–20°C, with cloudy skies and periods of rain. Wednesday brought frequent showers, local thunderstorms, and fairly strong winds — slightly below the long-term average maximum of 20.2°C for early September. Thursday was drier, but the unsettled pattern continued with intermittent sun and occasional rain Source: NL Times.

What this means for you

If you’re new to the Netherlands, this is a classic autumn transition. The KNMI issues no special alerts for this week — just the standard rain probabilities. But here are practical tips:

  • Plan outdoor activities for the weekend. Sunday’s 23°C forecast is a gift; make use of it.
  • Midweek rain means slippery bike paths. Check your bike lights and brakes, and consider waterproof gear.
  • Heating season is creeping in. With highs around 17–21°C, you may not need the radiator yet, but evenings will be cooler. If your rental has individual thermostats, now is the time to test them.
  • Stay informed via KNMI or Buienradar. The KNMI provides official warnings (code yellow/orange/red) for severe weather; midweek rain is not expected to reach that level.

Longer-term outlook

Meteorological autumn began on 1 September, and forecasters see no return of summer-like weather in the near future. Expect a mix of sunshine and showers at fairly average September temperatures Source: DutchNews.nl. The open question is whether the weekend warmth will persist into the following week — something to watch on the KNMI’s 10-day forecast.

For expats, the lesson is simple: enjoy the sunny intervals when they come, and always carry a rain jacket. It’s the Dutch way.
